Bear Hole Bear Hole

Bear Hole is a part of Big Chico Creek in Upper Bidwell Park. It is used as a swimming hole, as the water is especially deep here in the late spring and summer. Diving off of the high rocks is a popular activity at Bear Hole, but swimmers should be aware that this is incredibly dangerous and can lead to serious injuries that could be deadly. Additionally, the water currents can move quickly through the area, so swimmers should be careful to not get caught in faster moving waters that could trap you. The map above shows the location of the bear hole parking lot.

Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park

Bidwell Mansion, located at 525 Esplanade in Chico, California, was the home of General John Bidwell and Annie Bidwell from late 1868 until 1900, when Gen. Bidwell died. Annie continued to live there until her death in 1918. John Bidwell began construction of the mansion on his 26,000 acres) Rancho del Arroyo Chico in 1865, during his courtship of Annie Ellicott Kennedy. After their marriage in 1868, the three story, 26 room Victorian house became the social and cultural center of the upper Sacramento Valley. Now a museum and State Historic Park, it is California Historical Landmark #329 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The mansion was a $60,000 project, and was finished in May 1868.

Chico Creek Nature Center Chico Creek Nature Center

The Chico Creek Nature Center’s commitment to Bidwell Park education began in the mid-seventies by a coalition of environmental and recreation groups that offered nature programs and wildlife rehabilitation services. Wildlife rehabilitation is no longer offered by the Nature Center but The Janeece Webb Living Animal Museum still serves as a second-chance home for rehabbed, non-releasable animals.

Humboldt Ave. Skate Park Humboldt Ave. Skate Park

Humboldt Avenue Skate Park offers a couple of bowls to skate in and a nice shaded area. This park is well maintained by CARD and has many rules to keep the park up, the community happy, and the skaters safe.Skateboarders have envisioned a ramp at the Park since the Park’s inception. Through the efforts of a number of volunteers spearheaded by Richard Barnick of Tsunami Surf and Sport, the first ramp was built in 2006. The current ramp, located just a short walk past the Park barn, is a large wooden half-pipe. The pipe is 22 feet wide, 40 feet long and 4 feet high, with an 8 foot transition. It is open to the public during the Park's open hours.
